Smart homes on a budget!

The $1,000 Smart Home Package: Lighting, a Display, and a Better Lock

At $1,000 the smart home starts to feel designed rather than assembled. This package upgrades every item in the $500 plan, adds the two things I'd never build a house without (Lutron lighting control and a proper smart display), and still avoids monthly fees. Everything runs on Alexa with Apple Home and Google compatibility where it counts. This is the package that makes a home show well: lights that set themselves for the evening, a display in the kitchen, and a lock a buyer recognizes on the door.

Below: the six devices and why each one made the cut, the order to install them, what to add next, a FAQ, and my bottom line.

The $1,000 package

▶ ecobee Smart Thermostat Enhanced: $200

▶ Schlage Encode Plus smart lock: $290

▶ eufy Video Doorbell E340: $120

▶ Amazon Echo Show 8 (2025): $180

▶ Lutron Caseta Diva starter kit (hub, dimmer, Pico remote): $125

▶ Amazon Echo Dot (5th gen): $50

Total: about $965, with no subscriptions. On a Prime Day or Black Friday weekend, the Amazon devices alone drop by $80 to $100.

What changes at $1,000

Two things. First, lighting. Smart bulbs are where most people start and where most people get frustrated, because someone always flips the wall switch. Lutron Caseta solves that by making the wall switch the smart part, and it's the one brand in this price range that never drops offline. Second, a real display. The Echo Show 8 replaces the phone as the control panel for the house: camera feeds, the calendar, and a tap to dim the lights, all in the kitchen where the household actually happens. The lock and thermostat also step up a tier, because both are fixtures that stay with the house and both are worth the extra $60 to $120.

Setup order

▶ 1. Echo Show 8 and Echo Dot: Set up the Show in the kitchen first; it becomes the hub for the rest.

▶ 2. Lutron Caseta: Plug in the hub, swap the living room dimmer, and stick the Pico where you always wished there was a switch. Then link Lutron to Alexa.

▶ 3. Thermostat: Photograph the wiring, check the C-wire, install, and add it to Alexa.

▶ 4. Lock and doorbell: Swap the deadbolt, charge and mount the doorbell, and enable the doorbell feed on the Show.

▶ 5. Routines: Good Morning (lights up gradually, thermostat to daytime), Goodnight (lights off, lock, setback), and Away (everything off, lock, doorbell announcements on).

ecobee Smart Thermostat Enhanced

$200

CLIMATE

The same app, scheduling, and integrations as the flagship Premium without the built-in voice assistant, and it works with ecobee's SmartSensors so the rooms you use stay comfortable. Add a sensor for the primary bedroom when the budget allows.

WHY IT IS IN THE PACKAGE

Because it's the thermostat I'd put in most homes: everything that matters from the Premium (scheduling, eco+, geofencing, Matter, room sensor support) without paying for a microphone. Add a SmartSensor to the primary bedroom and it becomes a two-zone system for $40. The thermostat guide explains the C-wire check and the rebates that bring the price down further.

Schlage Encode Plus

$290

THE LOCK · MY BASELINE FOR YEARS

The lock that guarded my own front door through several Minnesota winters without a single failure. Built-in Wi-Fi with no hub, Apple Home Key tap-to-unlock, a keypad, a traditional keyway, and strong battery life. Every lock I tested in 2026 had to beat this one, and only two did.

WHY IT IS IN THE PACKAGE

Because it's the safe choice: Wi-Fi with no hub, Apple Home Key for iPhone households, a visible keypad, a real key, and years of proven reliability in Minnesota winters. It's sold at every home improvement store, so a buyer or a house sitter knows what it is. If you're an Apple household and want hands-free ultra-wideband, the smart lock ranking has the two locks that beat it; the $2,000 package upgrades to one of them.

eufy Video Doorbell E340

$120

FRONT DOOR · NO MONTHLY FEE

Dual cameras, local storage, and AI detection with no plan required; the live feed pops up on the Echo Show when someone rings. See the Video Doorbells guide for the five-year cost comparison against Ring.

WHY IT IS IN THE PACKAGE

Because it carries over from the $500 package unchanged; it's already the doorbell I'd buy at any budget. Two cameras, local storage, no plan, and the live view on the Echo Show when someone rings is the feature the whole family uses. The video doorbell guide has the five-year cost comparison against Ring.

Amazon Echo Show 8 (2025)

$180

THE DISPLAY · KITCHEN COMMAND CENTER

The 2025 redesign is faster, sounds better, and has Zigbee, Thread, and Matter hubs built in, so sensors and switches connect without extra bridges. Camera feeds, the family calendar, recipes, video calls, and a control panel for everything else in this package. Prefer a pure control panel with no ads? Swap in the Echo Hub at the same price.

WHY IT IS IN THE PACKAGE

Because a display changes how the house is used. The 2025 Show 8 is fast enough that tapping a light or pulling up the doorbell feels instant, and the built-in Zigbee, Thread, and Matter radios make it the hub for whatever you add next. It also runs Alexa+ well, which turns the kitchen counter into the place you ask about dinner, the weather, and whether the door is locked. The smart speaker guide covers the Echo Hub alternative if you want a control panel with no ads.

Lutron Caseta Diva starter kit

$125

LIGHTING · THE UPGRADE EVERYONE NOTICES

The hub, one Diva dimmer, and a Pico remote get you started; add Diva dimmers and Claro switches room by room for about $70 each (or the 3-way kit with a Pico for $85). Caseta works with or without a neutral wire, runs on its own radio so it never touches your Wi-Fi, and integrates with Alexa, Apple Home, Google, Sonos, and Ring. It is the only switch brand in my house.

WHY IT IS IN THE PACKAGE

Because it's the single upgrade most likely to make a visitor say the house feels smart. The starter kit covers one room; the plan is to add a Diva dimmer or Claro switch to the kitchen, entry, and exterior lights over the next few months, and to use Pico remotes for three-way circuits and badly placed switches. Caseta needs no neutral wire, so it works in older Minneapolis and St. Paul homes where other switches don't. The switch guide walks through the whole system, and the lighting guide covers the bulbs and strips to layer on top.

Amazon Echo Dot (5th gen)

$50

VOICE IN A SECOND ROOM

A Dot in the bedroom or office extends voice control, announcements, and intercom across the house, and it plays nicely with the Show as a stereo pair or a drop-in target.

WHY IT IS IN THE PACKAGE

Because voice control in one room isn't voice control. A Dot in the bedroom means the Goodnight routine happens from bed, alarms and white noise live where you sleep, and announcements reach the whole house. It's also the cheapest way to extend the Show's intercom. Buy it on sale; it's routinely under $30.

Frequently asked questions

Why Lutron instead of smart bulbs?

Because switches control the fixtures people actually use and they work from the wall for everyone. Bulbs are for color and lamps, and they're the next layer, not the first. Lutron's radio also keeps thirty switches off your Wi-Fi.

Can I build this on Apple Home or Google instead?

Yes. Every device here except the Echos works with Apple Home and Google. Swap the Show 8 for a Nest Hub or wait for Apple's display, swap the Dot for a Google Home Speaker or HomePod mini, and the rest is identical.

What about a camera?

The doorbell covers the front door, and for most homes that's enough at this budget. The $2,000 package adds a backyard or driveway camera; the security camera guide explains why I'd wait and buy a hardwired one.

How long does setup take?

About a half day for all six, most of it the thermostat and the dimmer. Nothing here requires an electrician, though an older home without a neutral wire is exactly why Caseta is the pick.

What stays with the house when I sell?

The thermostat, lock, doorbell, and Lutron dimmers are fixtures and convey; the Echo devices and the Caseta hub are yours to take, though leaving the hub makes the buyer's life easier. Reset everything before closing.

The bottom line

Six devices, about $965, no subscriptions. The ecobee Enhanced and Schlage Encode Plus are the fixtures worth stepping up for, the eufy E340 carries over, and the Echo Show 8 and Lutron Caseta are the two additions that make a house feel designed. Add Caseta dimmers room by room and an ecobee sensor for the bedroom, and this package covers most homes for years.

Where to go next

▶ Two or three more Caseta Diva dimmers for the main floor ($70 to $85 each).

▶ An ecobee SmartSensor for the bedroom ($40).

▶ A robot vacuum on Prime Day or Black Friday; the Roborock Q10 S5+ is Vacuum Wars' top budget pick at about $330.

▶ When you're ready for hands-free unlocking, cameras, and floors that clean themselves, the $2,000 package is the next step.
