Two thousand dollars buys the smart home I'd put in a client's new build if they asked me to spec it and keep it subscription-free. Hands-free unlocking, the best thermostat on the market, a dedicated control panel, whole-floor lighting control, a robot vacuum with a self-cleaning dock, and a security camera that needs no monthly plan. Every item below is something I own or have tested, and the whole package works together through Alexa with Apple Home and Google support where you want it.
This is the package I'd point a buyer toward on move-in day, because it covers every category a home actually uses and leaves nothing that needs replacing later. Total: about $1,925, with no subscriptions. Bought across a Prime Day or Black Friday window, the robot vacuum and the Amazon devices alone can save $200.
What changes at $2,000
Three things. The lock goes hands-free: ultra-wideband is the first smart lock feature that a key could never do, and the Schlage Sense Pro is the best version of it. The lighting covers the whole main floor instead of one room, which is the point where a house starts running scenes rather than switches. And two new categories arrive: a robot vacuum with a dock that empties and washes itself, and a camera for the driveway or backyard that records locally with no plan. The control panel swaps from a Show to the Echo Hub, because at this level a dedicated dashboard on the wall earns its place.
Setup order
▶ 1. Echo Hub and Echo Dot: Mount the Hub at the main entry or in the kitchen (a recessed box and a PoE adapter make it flush in new construction) and set up the Dot upstairs.
▶ 2. Lutron Caseta: Hub first, then the living room dimmer, then the two 3-way kits for the kitchen and entry. Link to Alexa and build the Movie Night and Goodnight scenes.
▶ 3. Thermostat: Install the Premium, place the included sensor in the primary bedroom, and enroll in your utility's rebate.
▶ 4. Lock and doorbell: Add the Sense Pro to Apple Home or Alexa via Matter, set up Home Key, and mount the E340.
▶ 5. Camera and vacuum: Mount the Altas where it gets a few hours of sun and can see the driveway; let the T80S map the house overnight.

Because it's the best lock I tested this year, and hands-free unlocking is the one feature that makes people stop and ask about the house. Because it's the thermostat on my own wall and the best one you can buy for a house with rooms that don't match the hallway. The included sensor goes in the bedroom, the radar knows when the house is empty, and the air quality monitor tells you when to run the fan. WHY IT IS IN THE PACKAGE
Because at this level the house deserves a control panel, not a screen that plays ads between lighting scenes. The Hub shows every room, scene, camera, and lock in a layout a guest or a house sitter can understand at a glance, it wakes when you approach, and its Zigbee, Thread, and Matter radios are the hub for the Sense Pro and anything you add later. A 4K pan-tilt camera with a solar panel that keeps it charged and, unusually for a battery camera, continuous recording to a microSD card. Point it at the driveway or backyard with no wiring. Because it's the rare battery camera I'd actually recommend: the solar panel keeps it charged, it records continuously to a microSD card rather than only on motion, and the 4K pan-tilt lens covers a driveway and a side yard from one mount. Frequently asked questions
Why no security system in this package?
Because the doorbell, camera, and lock cover the front door and driveway, and a monitored alarm is a monthly cost this package is built to avoid. When you want one, Abode or Ring Alarm both start under $300 and integrate with everything here.
Can this be an Apple Home package?
Mostly. The Sense Pro, ecobee, Lutron, and E340 (via Alexa or Google; limited HomeKit) all fit, and the Sense Pro's ultra-wideband unlocking is an Apple Home Key feature. Swap the Echo Hub and Dot for HomePod minis and wait for Apple's display; the rest stays.
Is the Echo Hub better than an Echo Show?
For a wall panel, yes: no ads, no video, a faster smart home interface, and a PoE option. For a kitchen counter where you also want recipes, video calls, and a TV, the Show 8 is the same price and the better fit. Some homes end up with both.
What does this cost over five years?
About $1,925, because nothing here has a subscription. The equivalent package built on Ring cameras, a Ring doorbell, and a Nest Aware plan would add roughly $500 to $900 in fees over the same period.
What stays with the house when I sell?
The lock, thermostat, doorbell, dimmers, and Echo Hub (if wall-mounted) are fixtures; the camera, vacuum, and Dot go with you unless you negotiate otherwise. Reset everything and hand over the Lutron hub and app logins at closing.
The bottom line
Eight devices, about $1,925, no subscriptions, and nothing you'll replace. The Schlage Sense Pro and ecobee Premium are the best in their categories, Lutron Caseta across the main floor makes the house feel designed, the Echo Hub puts it all on the wall, and the Ecovacs T80S Omni and Reolink Altas add the two categories that give you back the most time and peace of mind.
